JALESSA MONTAQUE
Director of Photography - Creative Producer - Writer
A self-proclaimed nomad with an insatiable curiosity about the world. Born and raised in the vibrant culture of Jamaica, her family's migration to New York in 2002 ignited her passion for exploration and activism. With a unique blend of immigrant experiences, a New York upbringing, and a love for travel, She has emerged as a dedicated advocate for Black and immigrant rights. She harnesses the transformative power of art, storytelling, and visual mediums to champion her causes.

Holding a B.A. in Media Production and Communications from SUNY Buffalo State College, Jalessa was deeply involved in community engagement both on and off campus.
As a student leader, she organized and led impactful protests, including one demanding support for Black students and opposing the removal of Black Greek Lettered Organizations from campus. As a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., she collaborated with fellow Greek organizations and nonprofits on community service projects to uplift the City of Buffalo. Additionally, she has co-taught a film class during her academic journey.

Post-graduation, Jalessa took her activism to the New York State Capital, where she lobbied for womb health rights and the Parent-Child Security Act, a groundbreaking legislation legalizing compensated gestational surrogacy across the state of New York.

A visual artist by trade, Jalessa possesses expertise in photography, cinematography, creative consultation, directing, and producing. Her creative talents extend to event curation, and she made her mark by curating, funding, and exhibiting a mixed media art show in Buffalo, NY. The exhibition delved into the profound effects of relationship trauma on long-term mental health.

Jalessa's work as a filmmaker also garnered recognition, with one of her short films featured in prestigious events like the Luminal Theater Cinema Block Party in Bedford-Stuyvesant, NYC, and the MMFF (Micro Media Film Festival). She was featured in Shoutout Atlanta for her unique background. These platforms celebrated the unique issues faced by Black women, showcasing Jalessa's commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Jalessa is a passionate advocate for environmental justice. She firmly believes that protecting our planet requires inclusive perspectives, with a particular focus on amplifying the voices of Black and indigenous communities.
